James Mahoney is one of the firm’s co-founders and managing partner. In this role, his focus is on steady organic growth and strategic expansion of services to meet the evolving needs of all clients. Jim oversees all operations of the firm. He also directs the tax department with a special expertise in closely held businesses within a wide range of industries.
His practice areas include accounting methods, flow through entities (partnerships and S corporations), succession planning, transaction advisory services (both buy and sell side M & A activities) and executive tax and business consulting.
A strong believer in forging deep relationships with clients, Jim serves as a true business and family advisor. He strives to instill this supreme level of trustworthiness and diligence in all MahoneySabol employees.
Previously, Jim spent the early years of his accounting career at Deloitte & Touche as a senior tax manager. There, he headed up their Construction Industry Group. In 1990, he cofounded Mahoney Sabol & Company, LLP with Michael Sabol.
Jim received a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from the University of Connecticut and a Master’s Degree in Taxation from the University of Hartford.

Jim holds Series 7 and 66 Securities Licenses through Commonwealth Financial Network, Member FINRA/SIPC, as well as Life Insurance Licenses from Connecticut and Florida.
He is a member of both the state and national societies of CPAs and has served on various boards including The Hospital for Special Care and its parent, Center for Special Care, Inc., The Xavier Alumni Association and the Middlesex County YMCA. He is also active in the Metro Hartford Alliance, CBIA and the Middlesex Chamber of Commerce.
